POSITION TITLE: President
The President of the Foundation reports directly to the Chair of the Foundation Board of Directors. The President is responsible for the leadership of the Foundation enterprise; personal participation in fund raising; management of Foundation assets; and effective partnering with Fairmont State University and its leadership. The President will be a visionary and progressive leader and will have the broad institutional experience and the intellect necessary to motivate and to lead a diverse team of professionals and volunteers to inspire philanthropy to advance the mission of the Fairmont State Foundation, Inc. and Fairmont State University.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide vision, identify and articulate objectives, and lead in word and deed the Foundation's operations in a manner that is most efficient and effective toward the fulfillment of its mission and goals.
- Work in conjunction with the Director of Operations and Advancement Services to institute and lead planning processes to guide the organization forward and to provide a common context for its operations.
- Directly supervise and manage the Foundation's Development team to include recruitment of staff.
- Frequently serve as the chief spokesperson for the Foundation, especially to FSU constituencies such as alumni, parents, friends, corporations, foundations, the local community, and especially, donors.
- Act as principal staff to the Foundation's Board of Directors and its Chair.
- Serve on all Foundation standing committees as an ex-officio member to coordinate the activities as directed by the Foundation Chair and Committee Chairs.
- Serve as an ex-officio member of the Foundation Board of Directors and provide support to the Chair in planning and preparation for meetings of the Board of Directors.
- Responsible for leading the Foundation's visibility efforts. Duties may include, but are not limited to, serving on boards of directors, committees, professional organizations, community related organizations, or other groups whose goals are consistent with the mission of the Foundation.
- Develops and implements an annual work plan to fulfill all quantifiable personal work performance goals for contacts, major gift solicitations, closed major gifts, new major gift prospects identified, and revenue goals as set forth by the Foundation for development staff.
- Plan and lead all fundraising efforts in cooperation and in coordination with FSU leadership and based on FSU priorities, to include the annual fund, major gifts, and planned giving.
- Undertakes an aggressive plan to qualify, cultivate and solicit major gift prospects at the highest levels in terms of total value and complexity of the transaction for the Foundation.
- Manages a personal portfolio of major gift donors and prospects while focusing on aligning the needs at Fairmont State with the interests and motivations of current and prospective donors.
- Fosters a culture of philanthropy and ensure that fundraising is executed in keeping with the organization’s values, vision, and mission.
- Develops and maintains a comprehensive knowledge of the University, including its mission, history and current and future priorities, representing all aspects of the university and its opportunities and needs for private support.
- Provide staffing and coordination for the fund-raising activities of senior personnel from the FSU and the FSF, especially the FSU President and senior leadership of the Foundation Board and the FSU Board of Governors and other volunteers to build long term relationships.
- Plan and lead quarterly meetings with Foundation Board Members to seek input for potential prospects for cultivation to ensure the Foundation is meeting its goal.
- Drafts and executes gift agreements, gift acceptance letters, funding proposals, and other presentations associated with development work.
- Maintains accountability and ensures compliance with all regulations and laws, as well as the code of ethics for fundraising professionals.
- Ensures that donor gift intentions and expectations are met with the parameters of FSF gift policies to ensure a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship.
- Performs related administration duties by recording all contact with donors and prospects into the Foundation’s constituent management system.
- Plans, schedules and completes frequent in and out of state travel, often overnight for multiple nights, to contact donors and prospects.
Partner with the Fairmont State University (FSU):
- Maintain positive close working relationships with the: President, Provost, Vice Presidents, Deans, Chairs, and other key FSU leaders to ensure the coordination and cooperation among each of the FSU's colleges, departments, and divisions in all matter relating to fund raising and asset management.
- Coordinate with various Governing Boards to ensure optimal cooperation in pursuit of the missions of the FSU and FSF. Serve as chief communicator for volunteers with FSU leadership
Management of assets:
- Work with the Director of Operations and Advancement Services to ensure the creation of systems and implementation of programs designed to provide accountability to the donors for their gifts, including but not limited to gift acknowledgment, accurate record keeping, and any reporting on the status of gifts and accounts that shall be agreed upon between donors and Foundation and/or determined to be beneficial in regard to the pursuit of future gifts. Foundation focus on donor intent is critical to long term relationships and donor satisfaction.
QUALIFICATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS
Minimum 7 years’ experience in a fundraising or business development role.
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- Personnel and fiscal management experience required. Private business background with volunteer fund-raising involvement will be considered.
- Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills to interact with all constituencies, including but not limited to, speaking, writing, editing and proofreading.
- Demonstrated excellent organizational skills required to coordinate and manage competing demands.
- Ability to discover and interpret donor and giving trends and issues in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors.
- Demonstrated ability to travel extensively by car/air, attend evening/weekend events, comply with travel policy/timelines.
- Exceptionally strong leadership qualities, including strategic vision, personnel development, the ability to assess risk, and collaboration,
- The highest level of honesty, integrity, and professional standards including a commitment to donor intent with a passion for holding others to those standards
- The financial acumen necessary to manage an operation with a considerable budget, to participate and to contribute to discussions of investment policy and strategy, and to provide sound counsel on issues of institution-wide financial impact.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office, Windows, mobile technology, constituent management databases and professional use of social media.
- Demonstrated ability to work with highly sensitive and confidential information.
May be required to use the computer screen for extensive periods of time.
Occasional lifting of 15 to 20 lbs.
Extended working hours and travel may be necessary.
