Fairmont State University is on the front lines of training qualified students for the health care industry. A contribution to the College of Nursing will be put to use immediately by providing scholarships to entice students to stay in school and continue their education, by providing discretionary funds to purchase needed equipment and by helping to hire more adjuncts to help increase the number of students we can train.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (2018) projects 1.1 million additional nurses are needed to avoid further shortages. Employment opportunities for nurses are projected to grow at a faster rate (15%) than all other occupations through 2026 (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2018). The Fairmont State University College of Nursing has a 100 percent placement rate among its graduates seeking employment.

High-fidelity patient simulators are life-like manikins that are programmed to react physiologically as a real human would. These simulators are used to create high-risk scenarios to allow learners to practice, develop, and refine nursing skills and clinical reasoning without the risk of harming a real person. In the hospital setting, if these situations would arise, the learners would assume an observational role while the patient is stabilized; however, in the simulation lab, the learners are placed in the role of the registered nurse and must assess and analyze the patient, review lab and diagnostic study reports, and vital signs while they communicate with other healthcare team members, implement appropriate interventions, and evaluate the patient’s condition throughout the scenario.
The environment is set up to have individual patient rooms, a supply cart, a medication room cart, a crash cart with an operating LifePak defibrillator and realistic emergency medications, and operating IV pumps and other equipment. Each patient room is supplied with a headboard for oxygen, medical air, suction equipment, a patient bedside table and stand, and a patient monitor. Laptops are in each room uploaded with data such as laboratory values, medication administration records, and healthcare provider orders that pertain to the scenario to allow the learners to have a realistic experience.
